Heritage Preservation Days is a digitization project that provides the opportunity to preserve family heritage through digitization.

Join Perkins Center at GCLS Glassboro Public Library!

Community members are welcome to bring in family heirlooms that relate to foodways and cultural food traditions such as, aged photographs, negatives, heirloom cooking instruments, handwritten recipes, handcrafted pottery, back-dated news articles, traditional herbal remedies, heritage farming and gardening tools, passed-down cook books, ancestral holiday linens and artwork.

There will also be a Sharing Station, where participants can tell stories associated with their treasures. Participants may also choose to have the stories recorded in the Oral History Booth.

Attendees will be gifted a high-quality digital copy of their artifacts and stories as family keepsakes to pass down to next generations. The photographs will be scanned, the artifacts will be photographed, and the stories will be recorded by audio. Each entry will be documented by metadata.

We anticipate the collections to be housed on the NJ Digital Highway, once it is established. Some will be shared on Perkins’ and funders’ websites. With permissions of the owners, selected items will be showcased at the Tastefully South Jersey Exhibition that will be held in Collingswood July through August.

This project is funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities and the New Jersey Council for the Humanities.
