ARTS In-School Residencies

Perkins Center for the Arts has been committed to arts education throughout its history. The Center offers arts and training programs for students, teachers, service organizations, and schools.

Perkins Center’s ARTS (Arts Reaching the Students) in-school residency program places professional artists in local schools for residencies ranging in length from 6 to 20 days. Individually designed projects build visual skills, develop deliberate habits of mind, teach problem-solving strategies and encourage communication among students. Perkins Center’s teaching artists work closely with the school’s art and classroom teachers to incorporate the New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards, 21st Century Skills and the National Arts Standards into the learning process.

The ARTS Program is co-sponsored by the New Jersey State Council on the Arts. Past Perkins Center ARTS programs have introduced students to a variety of media, including papermaking, fabric arts, sculpture, painting, theater, dance and mural arts

Themes incorporated into the residencies have included cultural diversity, environmental sustainability, social responsibility, and individual school themes related to character values and year long study areas.

Perkins Center for the Arts also serves teachers and schools by facilitating Professional Development/In-Service programs for area schools. Perkins Center for the Arts has provided In-Service programming for the Medford Township, Mount Laurel, Carteret and Southampton Public School Districts. The in-service program is designed with the Curriculum Supervisor and can be adapted across grade levels. Each custom designed residency incorporates the New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards, 21st Century Skills and the National Arts Standards into the learning process.

As creative professionals, Teaching Artists are placed in environments where the Core Curriculum Content and Arts Standards are the framework of arts learning in a residency. Teaching artists need to be taught how to incorporate these standards into their programs. Perkins Center for the Arts provides Teaching Artist Training in several ways: participation in the New Jersey Arts Education Collective’s annual conference for teaching artists, CONNECT, observation, feedback and support from the Manager of ARTS Education Programs and consultation with teacher artists and art teachers.
